PROJECT MONTPARNASSE

BY STUDIOPARISIEN

The latest project by Studioparisien is an apartment set in Montparnasse, Paris; a district illustriously known to be the mystic place of artists and painters who created the French artistic renewal of the 20th century.

The apartment measuring 110 square meters, is situated in a building that was designed by the late French architect Bruno Elkouken in 1932. Elkouken’s work became distinctly recognised during this period for his strong use of geometric forms, which became an archetype for his work during the modern movement of the 1930’s - a time that was also referred to as the ‘l'esthétique paquebot.’

Laurene Tardrew and Romain Jourdan of Studioparisien, were given the brief by their clients to respect and reveal the pure lines of the architecture, which included the curved shape and period of the apartment. They requested for the space to be opened up where the atmosphere of the apartment could feel light, airy and soft. The owners also requested for the apartment to be designed with timeless decor and furniture pieces.

The duo worked to find the right balance between weaving contemporary design whilst also respecting the original architecture and historical period of the building. Romain and Laurene worked to suggest the right shades and colours, as well as create a certain filtered privacy for the large windows. They also worked on designing custom-made modern furniture that would fit the space, as well honour the story of the building, which was well received by their clients. The original curved-shaped living room became a focal point of inspiration and to create an original touch for Studioparisien. They desired to adapt the tables and sofas to the volumes, and find the curved shapes and lines to create flow and circulation within the space. To create this soft and sophisticated space, they collaborated with bespoke galleries to help complete their vision for furnishing the apartment, as well as working with some high-end French craftsman to create their own furniture pieces. Some of the interior architect’s own collectible designs are also featured in the space, which include the ‘Moon’ chair and ‘Yumi’ sofa designed for Philippe Hurel, as well as their mastic cracked lacquer and stainless steel mirror polished ‘Panther’ coffee table, ‘Sévigné’ daybed and ‘Luco’ dining table and chairs.
