In the Flemish municipality of Antwerp, Brasschaat, we find this beautifully restored residence by Hans Verstuyft Architects. Brasschaat, is situated in one of Antwerps’ famous green belts where serene parks and woodlands sprawl, and this residence thrives within its location. The residence, which was once formally owned by the clients’ parents, has now been revived into a contemporary abode embraced by the next generation who call it their family home.

The house is filled with an abundance of natural light that radiates throughout the living spaces, giving warmth to the luxuriously high-ceiling spaces of the home. This light and warmth is amplified within the residence, thanks to the practice of reduction that is combined with a sober colour and material palette; a signature aesthetic of Verstuyft. This is found in the pairing of white walls and cabinetry, as well as natural materials found through the use of light grey marble stone kitchen bench tops, and blonde timber flooring throughout the house. This reduction technique, extends to the use of neutral Scandi modern furnishings and textures that can be found throughout the home.

Whilst the house has been revived and has been given a contemporary aesthetic, it still retains its character due to the original qualities and features that have been preserved. Verstuyft, has honoured the integrity of the house by retaining architectural details that are a symbolic nod to its history. Subtle hints that characterise the history of the home appear through the ornate wall panels and cornices, french doors, window lites and large archways.

The Brasschaat project, is a home where one can find the tender quality of tranquility that is achieved through the practice of its reduced aesthetic.
